The way the violence in Hacksaw Ridge is styled is in direct opposition to the message of the film; unless you think Christianity and faith are supposed to celebrate death and destruction. Gibson just loves blood and guts too much to make a film about the horrors of war that doesn't feel like it wants you to celebrate it like he does.

Which is weird because the movie focuses on a conscientious objector in a time where violence is seen as a necessity. That seemingly contradicting statement is a great platform that could possibly push the genre to explore new ideas thematically. But instead it just fell back upon ideas we've seen before.
