An 1100 is not necessarily too big for a beginner, just have to take it easy to start and make sure it fits you physically. The newer cruisers are all pretty low on the seat, so shorter people can reach the ground easier on them. Poor starting even in cold weather, is an indication of a problem. The proper procedure should work even in very cold weather: Full choke No throttle. It sounds like a carb adjustment problem but may be plugs or dirty air filter.
