The22 short, 22 long, and 22 long rifle all have the same rim, base, and neck diameter on the case (this is known as a straight case). This means that you can technically fire a 22 short or long in a 22 long rifle, however, the 22 long rifle has been designed with a chamber specific for a 22lr cartridge. Themovement of the bolt is very short. It doesn’t have to travel much to cycle a .22 Long Rifle cartridge. This means the effort to operate the rifle is slight.
